Heriot Watt University

Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world's first mechanics' institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in the UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.

Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge

In 1821 linen merchant Leonard Horner and clock maker Robert Bryson founded the Edinburgh School of Arts – the world’s first Mechanics Institute. With a remit to provide technical education for working class men, and ultimately also women, the School inspired a global movement to expand access to education. With subsequent additional funding from the George Heriot’s Trust and the James Watt subscription fund, the School became Heriot-Watt College in 1885 and became a University in 1966. The University continues to promote innovation in teaching and research in a global environment.

The University boasts multiple campuses, with three in Scotland, and one each in Malaysia and Dubai. Heriot-Watt won an award from the Scottish Council of Development and Industry because of its international focus and it also performs well in physical sciences, mathematics, business and management, engineering and the built environment. It won the 'International University of the Year' 2018 award from Times Higher Education.

95% of Heriot-Watt first degree graduates were in employment or further study within six months of graduating and it is the number 1 university in Scotland for the highest paid salaries (Times Higher Education).

Every year, nearly 4,500 students benefit from Plymouth’s work-based learning and placement opportunities. Plymouth’s growing global presence places it amongst the top universities for Transnational Education. It has won the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education three times.

The university’s high-quality interdisciplinary research caters to national, international and regional needs. It has received the European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award, for its commitment to the career development of its researchers. The university first received the award in 2011 and has retained it for a third time in 2017.
