The University of Portsmouth (formerly known as Portsmouth Polytechnic) is a public university in the city of Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It is a consistently high-performing University Alliance establishment across national league tables, placed within the top 25 of UK universities. It is one of only four universities in the South-East to be rated Gold in the Government Teaching Excellence Framework.


Portsmouth has educated a wide range of people, including Tim Peake, Grayson Perry, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, Sir John Armitt, Baroness Diana Maddock, and CEO of HSBC John Flint. Its alumni can be found worldwide, holding senior and executive positions in banking, politics, and civil engineering. Staff at the University include Alessandro Melis, curator of the Italian Pavilione at the XVII Venice Biennale, and astrophysicist and Eddington Medal winner Prof Claudia Maraston.

Undergraduate entry requirement:


If you have an average of 75% or above in the 12 Standard (State Board) examinations or 70% in the Central Board, we'll consider you for admission onto an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor's degree. You must have studied relevant subjects and achieved strong grades.

You can also apply if you have successfully completed a recognised foundation programme. We recommend you take a foundation course at our associated college International College Portsmouth (ICP).

A levels

  • Please check your specific course page to find the exact number of points needed. Your A level grades should equal or exceed the total points required. You can use the UCAS Tariff Calculator to work out your total points.

  • Some courses will require you to have studied specific subjects at A level. For example, to study a science course you will usually need to have achieved passing grades in scientific subjects at A level.

  • A level points: A* = 56 A = 48 B = 40 C = 32 D = 24.


Postgraduate entry requirement:


For entry to our Master's programmes, you will generally need to have a Bachelor's degree with at least 2nd Class Honours to be considered.

You may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower level degree if you have work experience relevant to the degree applied for. Find out more about Recognised Prior Learning.

You can also choose to take a pre-master's programme at International College Portsmouth (ICP) for a number of courses.


PhDs

We'll consider you for a PhD if you have a good Master’s degree and submit a research proposal.


English Language Requirements

  • We accept an overall score of 75% or above in English on the India Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)/Standard 12, IELTS, IGCSE and several other certificates, but don’t worry if you're currently short of the standard required – we offer English Language Programmes that will get you to the necessary level.

  • 6.0 bands with no component below 5.5.

  • 6.5 to 7.0, with no component below 6.0

The University of Portsmouth has two campuses – the Portsmouth campus and the Langstone campus. The Langstone Campus is smaller and situated in Milton. The university has five faculties that are further divided into 29 schools or departments.




University offers on-campus housing to international students enrolled in a full-time degree programme. The university housing accommodates over 500 students across its four different halls: Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother, Trust Hall, and Langstone Flats. All residence halls have facilities, such as, Wi-Fi connectivity, bed, desk, drawers, and sockets, and so on. The rent is inclusive of gas, electricity, heating, water bills, and basic insurance
